Donal Scanlon, 49, and 42 year old Alex Warnick were homeless and sleeping in tents pitched by the water's edge at Grand Parade in the days before the tragedy
The double drowning in Dublin's Grand Canal is believed to have been a tragic accident where one man fell into the water and the other died trying to save him.
It is understood screaming was heard in the early hours of Saturday, July 6, but it was not until around 8am it was reported two bodies were seen in the water. Their remains were removed from the scene and brought to the city morgue where postmortems, which will determine the direction of the investigations, were carried out.Read more: Gardai launch probe after two bodies discovered in Grand CanalThey had been camping opposite a refugee camp where asylum seekers had been sleeping.
A source confided to the Irish Mirror about the challenges of exiting the canal after dark, remarking: "While the canal is not particularly deep where the bodies were found, the bottom is very muddy and there's a lot of junk and stuff in there. If you waded in you'd sink in the mud and would find it difficult to move. It would be hard enough to get someone out in the day but in the dark it would be near impossible.
Officials revealed that the Dublin Region Homeless Executive, alongside local authorities, is coordinating with the gardai to determine how the tragic incident occurred.
