Clerks work to keep the gears of local government running smoothly around Alaska and the U.S.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska -
Clerks fulfill a vital function in the governments they serve, including in Fairbanks. According to Trickey, “We also maintain the records, retention schedule, for the whole entire borough.” Clerks also take legislators’ ideas and turn them into policy. “We take direction from the mayor and the chief of staff on things that need addressed in policy, we work together to create a policy, and then, of course, the mayor approves or disapproves that policy that we recommend, so we’re like the drafting body,” said Snider.
“The clerk serves as the election official, so being involved in politics and making that well-known in your job is not a good idea,” she added. “I am not a politician. I just work for them.” The job carries a number of challenges, including maintaining a work-life balance. “You kind of have to be careful there, because it can be really long hours with the late meetings sometimes,” said Snider.
This year, both clerks are being recognized for their work on a state level, holding leadership positions with the Alaska Association of Municipal Clerks . At the December 2023 annual conference, she ascended to the presidency, which is responsible for putting on the next year’s conference, happening in December 2024.
