More than 700 migrants arrived in the UK after crossing the Channel in a small boat on Sunday
, as two people died attempting the journey, Home Office figures show.French officials said 53 people were rescued, several of whom had suffered petrol burns, after a boat reported getting into difficulties.
The cumulative number of arrivals by small boats in 2024 now stands at a provisional total of 18,342. The highest number of migrants to arrive on a single day so far this year was 882 on 18 June while the second highest was 711 on 1 May, both of which occurred before the general election. “This latest tragedy underlines the terrible dangers of small boat crossings, and we continue to do everything we can to prevent callous criminals exploiting vulnerable people. Our thoughts are with those affected.”that French authorities are taking the lead on the investigation and it will not be commenting further at this stage.
