Booths, bubbles, burgers, snow cones, pies and more greeted community members who braved the weather to participate in the community event.
Published: Jul. 4, 2024 at 6:29 PM AKDTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - Rainy conditions couldn’t stop the community of Two Rivers from coming out to the fields behind the community center to celebrate the Fourth of July.
The opening ceremony included a rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner sung by Sarah Dallaire, accompanied by a demonstration by the Marine Corps Junior ROTC from West Valley High School.An inflatable obstacle course provided entertainment for children, while volunteers grilled up burgers and hot dogs for those who came to celebrate.However, a power outage the day prior added to the logistical hurdles of putting on the event.
Organizer Dave Olszowy described the process of preparing for the gathering, saying, “We had challenges with the weather. We were here all day yesterday, and then back this morning, before 8:00 this morning, and the prep before this was probably several months worth of work in terms of gifts for the silent auction, in terms of contractors and people assisting us in here, things with the food, et cetera, so months worth of preparation.
All this work came with the goal of celebrating a significant milestone in American history. Asked what the holiday means to him, Olszowy said, “It means the birthday of America. It means family. It means friends. It means remembering the people who died to make this all possible for us.”
