The bill’s bipartisan cosponsors included five Ohioans: Republicans Max Miller of Rocky River, Troy Balderson of Zanesville, Mike Carey of Columbus and Democrats Shontel Brown of Warrensville Heights and Greg Landsman of Cincinnati.

WASHINGTON, D. C. – As part of Republican drive to quash campus protests over Israel’s war with Hamas, the GOP-controlled House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bipartisan bill that aims to help enforcement of antidiscrimination laws by setting an official definition of antisemitism.of antisemitism in enforcing Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bars discrimination based on ethnicity, ancestry or national origin. Federally funded schools must comply with it.

In a House of Representatives speech before the vote, Miller said he was appalled to see a sign at the Columbia University protest that said ““The abhorrent behavior underscores the clear need for federal policy to protect Jewish students on these unfriendly campuses,” said Miller, one of two Jewish Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, on Tuesday said the legislation is part of a new House-wide effort to crack down on antisemitism on college campuses and hold universities accountable for failing to protect Jewish students. “Let’s pass this legislation and then let’s do the oversight and get the answers to those questions so the bad guys doing this stuff on college campuses can’t do it on a visa,” Jordan said before Wednesday’s vote.
