The President’s team has denied that he is anti-Britain but senior figures from the DUP have hit out at Biden’s close links with the Republic of Ireland
The President’s more measured approach in his keynote speech on Wednesday also won support from Northern Ireland Secretary, Chris Heaton-Harris, who told reporters in Belfast that “his words were profound” and “will have made a difference” in efforts to win over the DUP.
“I hope the Assembly and the Executive will soon be restored,” Mr Biden said. “That’s a judgment for you to make, not me, but I hope it happens.” But Sir Jeffrey added that “it doesn’t change the political dynamic in Northern Ireland” as he repeated calls to the Westminster Government for reassurances over the region’s place in the UK.
“We have a President that recognises the United Kingdom as a close ally and friend of the United States,” he said.
