UK bank holiday changes are coming in 2026 and 2027
UK bank holidays are set to change with Boxing Day moved and an additional day added. Bank holidays across the UK are being altered for 2026, with Christmas Day and Boxing Day affected by a scheduling quirk.
Over the coming two years, 2026 and 2027, bank holidays will be adjusted, UK households have been informed, with three 'substitute days' scheduled. In 2026, Boxing Day - which falls the day after Christmas Day on 26 December - will not be a bank holiday. This is due to it falling on a Saturday. Instead, an extra substitute day off will be granted on 28 December, the Labour Party government website confirms.
In 2027, arrangements change once more, with the usual day off on 1 January to mark New Year's Day as normal. The Easter 2027 bank holiday dates are then scheduled for 26 March and 29 March, with additional days off on 3 May, 31 May, and 30 August.
The government website also states that because 25 December 2027 falls on a Saturday and 26 December on a Sunday, UK households will receive two extra days off – the bank holidays will roll over to 27 December and 28 December, reports Birmingham Live. In England and Wales there are eight bank holidays, Scotland has nine bank holidays and Northern Ireland has 10.
A bank holiday was also added in 2023, on 8 May, to mark the coronation of King Charles III. Bank holidays have also been previously granted for the royal wedding in 2011 and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012. This year, Scotland benefits from an additional bank holiday, with King Charles granting an extra day off to mark Scotland's upcoming World Cup participation.
Bank holidays were originally established by Sir John Lubbock, a scientific writer, banker, politician and the first Baron of Avebury. In 1871, he put forward the Bank Holiday Bill. Upon becoming law, it created the first official bank holidays.
