The UK faces another severe weather threat as Storm Herminia follows on the heels of Storm Eowyn, which caused widespread damage and a fatality. The Met Office warns of potential 'injuries and danger to life' due to strong winds and heavy rain, urging caution across the country.
The UK is bracing for another round of severe weather as Storm Herminia follows on the heels of Storm Eowyn , which was dubbed the 'strongest storm in a decade'. Storm Eowyn struck last Friday, unleashing winds that reached a provisional peak gust of 100mph in Drumalbin, Lanarkshire. Tragically, one person lost their life, and homes and businesses suffered extensive damage. Travel was severely disrupted, with numerous flight and other transportation cancellations.
Storm Herminia, named by Spain's weather authorities, is set to initially impact the South West before sweeping across much of the UK and Ireland. As of 8am today, the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning, indicating a potential for 'injuries and danger to life' due to anticipated wind gusts exceeding 80mph. The Met Office has issued rain warnings for eight regions: East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, North West England, South West England, Wales, West Midlands, and Yorkshire and Humber. Additionally, wind warnings are in effect for seven areas: East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, North East England, South West England, West Midlands, and Yorkshire and Humber. The South West is particularly vulnerable, with warnings of powerful gusts from 6am to 11am on Sunday. Forecasts suggest these gusts could reach speeds of up to 75mph. Experts have extended cautions for the region, now spanning from 6am Monday until 6am Tuesday. The Met Office has expressed concern, stating: 'A brief (in any one location) spell of very strong winds is possible overnight Sunday into Monday, moving northeastwards across parts of the highlighted region. Gusts of 55-65 mph are possible, should this spell develop, with a very small chance of localised gusts of up to 80 mph, particularly near coasts.' They added: 'Confidence remains very low with regards to the track of this development, if it occurs. The strongest winds will probably only affect a narrow swathe somewhere within the broader warning area.'The Met Office has also issued guidance regarding the expected rainfall. They predict a period of heavy rain affecting central and southern England and much of Wales during Sunday morning, followed by heavy, thundery showers. Rainfall amounts are expected to range from 10-20mm, with locally higher amounts of 30-50mm possible, particularly over high ground facing south or southeast. There's a possibility of another heavy rain event affecting parts of England and Wales on Sunday evening, clearing early Monday. This could result in some areas receiving as much as 80mm of rain in total. Driving conditions are anticipated to be challenging due to the potential for surface water and river flooding, compounded by recent heavy rain. The Met Office advises checking their website for more specific updates on your location.
