The UK may experience a 'Beast from the East' this weekend as cold Easterly winds bring the possibility of snow and freezing temperatures . The Met Office has issued a warning of a ' cold snap ' as temperatures drop later this week, potentially leading to snow and wintry conditions in parts of Scotland and England. These wintry winds will originate from the East, moving in from Scandinavia.
Experts have suggested that this weather front could be characterized as a 'Beast from the East,' a term used in 2018 when severe winter blizzards struck the British Isles. Currently, there are no active weather warnings across the UK. However, the Met Office predicts light snowfall in some areas. Patches of snow could also reach parts of Oldham, Rochdale, Tameside, and the Pennines around 9pm on Friday, February 7th. While temperatures are not expected to fall significantly below freezing, the Met Office states that these so-called Easterlies will make it feel colder. A Met Office spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News (M.E.N): 'As Easterly winds move in from Scandinavia on Friday and through to the weekend, temperatures are set to feel lower than they are. Actual temperatures will be just lower than average for this time of year, with the potential for light snowfall in some areas.'The weather agency also warns that these cold winds and dropping temperatures could increase the risk of 'wintery hazards like snow and ice,' according to Frank Saunders, the Met Office Chief Meteorologist. What constitutes a 'Beast from the East'? The term 'Beast from the East' is a simple descriptor for when cold air from the East strikes the UK, bringing below-average temperatures and wintry conditions,' explained Prof. Liz Bentley, Chief Executive at the Royal Meteorological Society. In 2018, the UK faced blizzards and strong gales as a result of a cold, Easterly flow of air originating from Eurasia, known as a polar continental air mass, according to Prof. Bentley. 'The potential snow in the forecast for next week is linked with an easterly flow of air from the continent – so fits with the Beast from the East definition,' she told the M.E.N. The type of weather experienced depends on how far the air travels over the sea before reaching the UK. If it travels a longer distance over the North Sea, it picks up moisture and becomes unstable, bringing rain and snow to the East coast of Britain, according to the Met Office. Aidan McGivern, a Met Office meteorologist, stated that while not all Easterly winds are comparable to the 2018 Beast from the East, colder air may arrive next week. He said: 'If it continues throughout next week, there's always the possibility that even colder air will arrive, and with the additional risks of wintry weather.
