The UK government is considering bringing forward the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars to 2030, potentially impacting even mild hybrids. The Labour Party's campaign promise to revert to the 2030 deadline from the Conservative Party's proposed 2035 date is prompting consultations with industry experts.

New petrol and diesel cars could face a ban from 2030, which may also include self-charging and mild hybrid models. A spokesperson for the Department for Transport (DfT) indicated that after this date only specific hybrid models would be permitted for new sales. Originally, the Conservative Party government had moved the deadline to halt these vehicle sales to 2035, but the Labour Party has pledged to revert to the 2030 timeline as part of its campaign promises.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is now requesting input from automotive and electric vehicle charging specialists to 'restore clarity' on the implementation of the ban. The government initiated an eight-week consultation process to obtain professional opinions on which vehicles might remain available for purchase alongside entirely zero-emission ones post-2030, including full hybrids and plug-in hybrids. It will also consider van strategies and regulations affecting manufacturers with a smaller production footprint. The DfT spokesperson elaborated: 'The original phase-out date included the provision for some hybrid vehicle sales between 2030 and 2035. We know it is important to provide certainty and stability for drivers and will set out further details in due course.' Among the models potentially impacted are the Dacia Jogger, Ford Puma MHEV, and Volkswagen Tiguan SUV, as well as the Range Rover MHEV, and the BMW X1. Industry chiefs have cautioned that drivers are not adopting electric vehicles swiftly enough to meet targets due to high purchase costs and inadequate charging infrastructure, reports Birmingham Live. The government has responded by stating that the ongoing consultation is part of a broader initiative to simplify and reduce the cost of charging electric vehicles. The UK currently boasts over 72,000 public charging points, with plans for an additional 100,000 by local councils in England, the government report
