In the Lords committee Lady Manningham-Buller, the former head of MI5, asks what has gone wrong. She says at the start of the crisis Sir Patrick Vallance, the government’s chief scientific adviser, said the UK would be doing well to have just 20,000 deaths. The death toll is now about double that, she says. Prof Matt Keeling from the University of Warwick said Vallance was talking about what would have happened if things had gone well. He suggests the lockdown could have been stricter.
