The UK government is considering bringing forward the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, potentially returning to the original 2030 target. A consultation seeks industry feedback on accelerating the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and adjusting the Zero Emissions Vehicle Mandate rules.
The UK's plans to ban petrol and diesel cars could be accelerated, with significant updates potentially being introduced sooner than expected. A new consultation is seeking the opinions of motor industry experts, asking how the UK can return to its original 2030 target for banning new combustion vehicles. The consultation proposes major changes to the Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate rules, which dictate the number of electric cars that must be produced.
The policy currently requires at least 22% of cars manufactured in UK factories to be zero-emission models, with targets increasing annually. However, many manufacturers have struggled to meet these targets, leading to reduced fees to avoid hefty fines of £15,000 per car over the limit. The consultation will reportedly consider introducing additional 'flexibilities' around this rule. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander warned of a 'lack of certainty and direction' in the motor industry, promising that new rules would help guide the sector back on track, reports The Express. She stated: 'Employing 152,000 people and adding £19 billion to our economy, the UK's automotive industry is a huge asset to our nation - and the transition to electric is an unprecedented opportunity to attract investment, harness British innovation, and deliver growth for generations to come. Yet over the last few years, our automotive industry has been stifled by a lack of certainty and direction. This Government will change that. Drivers are already embracing EVs faster than ever, with one in four new cars sold in November electric. Today's measures will help us capitalise on the clean energy transition to support thousands of jobs, make the UK a clean energy superpower, and rebuild Britain.' The Government has stated that the initial 2030 ban on petrol and diesel vehicles was 'broadly supported by industry'. However, the previous Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak postponed the ban until 2035 in September 2023
