This landmark study, published in The Lancet, analyzed anonymized health data from the entire UK population to assess COVID-19 vaccine coverage. The findings reveal significant disparities in vaccination rates and suggest that higher coverage could have prevented thousands of hospitalizations and deaths in summer 2022.

A groundbreaking study conducted by the University of Cambridge reveals that between one-third and half of the population across the four UK nations were not adequately vaccinated against COVID-19 by summer 2022. This comprehensive research, published in The Lancet, utilized secure access to anonymized health data covering the entire UK population, providing unprecedented insights into vaccine coverage .

The findings indicate that a significant number of hospitalizations and deaths could have been prevented if the UK had achieved higher vaccination rates.Researchers estimated that up to 7,180 hospitalizations and deaths out of approximately 40,400 severe COVID-19 cases during the four-month period from June to September 2022 might have been avoided with complete vaccination coverage. Under-vaccination was strongly linked to a higher risk of hospitalization and death across all age groups studied. Individuals who were under-vaccinated, particularly those over 75 years old, faced more than double the likelihood of experiencing severe COVID-19 outcomes compared to fully vaccinated individuals. The study also highlighted disparities in vaccination rates, revealing that younger people, men, those residing in areas with higher socioeconomic deprivation, and individuals from non-white ethnic backgrounds exhibited the highest rates of under-vaccination. The researchers emphasize that this study marks a significant advancement in UK scientific research, demonstrating the potential of uniting NHS data collected and stored differently across devolved nations. The infrastructure established for this study paves the way for future research utilizing routinely collected NHS data to improve understanding, prevention, and treatment of various diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and diabetes
