Altnaharra , in the northernmost Highlands region of Scotland , recorded a temperature of -14.5C shortly before 8pm on Thursday, marking the coldest overnight temperature since 2010. Temperatures dropped below -15C several times across the UK in 2010, with Altnaharra experiencing -22.3C on January 8th. While temperatures are not expected to drop below -18C in Altnaharra on Friday, there is a slight chance they could reach -19C. Large parts of the UK are bracing for further cold weather .
Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin stated that Friday night into Saturday morning may represent the coldest point of the current cold spell. Scotland's towns and cities could see temperatures between -2C and -5C, with the Highlands potentially reaching -14C or -15C. Higher ground in England, such as the Pennines, could see temperatures as low as -11C or -12C. Birmingham is forecast to be the coldest city in England, with a potential low of -4C. The average overnight low for northern Scotland during this period is around 0.3C, while England typically experiences lows between 1.5C and 1.6C. Met Office meteorologist Zoe Hutin emphasized the possibility of a cold night, especially in rural areas and under clear skies in the east and north. Cloud cover will moderate the temperature drop, but it will still be chilly. Snow is likely to fall overnight in the south-west hills and parts of Northern Ireland, though not to the extent seen over the past 10 days. Saturday is also expected to be cold, with Ms. Hutin indicating that another chilly night is on the way for Saturday. Eastern parts of England, including East Anglia, the northeast, northern and eastern Scotland, are likely to see widespread temperatures below freezing. However, Ms. Hutin predicts a milder trend starting Sunday and continuing into Monday. While there is a possibility of temperatures near or slightly below freezing on Sunday night into Monday, it will not be as severe as the recent cold snap. Looking ahead to next week, Ms. Hutin suggests a gradual warming trend, although temperatures will likely remain below average. She noted that the UK has experienced an unusually long cold spell, with progressively colder nights this week compared to previous years
