The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has extended an amber cold weather alert for England as the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) announces additional Cold Weather Payments for eligible households in 51 more postcode areas.
The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) will be sending £25 Cold Weather Payment s to eligible households in 51 more postcode areas as the current nationwide cold snap continues. Payments will be made to help vulnerable people with their heating costs as the UK experiences freezing temperatures and wintry conditions. Cold Weather Payment s are triggered when the temperature drops below 0C for seven consecutive days.
Eligible households in affected postcode areas are sent a one-off £25 payment straight in their bank account. To be eligible for the payments, households must be claiming a qualifying benefit such as Pension Credit, Income Support or Universal Credit. The first Cold Weather Payments of the year were triggered last week in areas of Cumbria and Northumberland. Today, the DWP confirmed that another 51 postcode areas are now eligible for the payments. The latest payments have been triggered by low temperatures recorded at the Bainbridge and Bingley weather stations, which cover parts of Lancashire and West Yorkshire. It comes as the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has extended an amber cold weather alert covering the whole of England. The cold weather health alert will now be in place until 9am on Tuesday, January 14. The amber alert warns that the low temperatures and wintry conditions are expected to have 'severe impacts across health and social care services'. The UKHSA warns that impacts may include a rise in deaths - particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions - and an increase in demand for health services. The Met Office has warned that the UK faces another 'bitterly cold night' tonight. The weather agency said wintry conditions will continue for another 24 hours before more mild air arrives at the weekend. On Wednesday night, the lowest temperatures so far this winter were recorded in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. England saw a low temperature of -11.2C, while Wales recorded a low of -7.9C and Northern Ireland recorded -7.2C.
