The UK government is expanding its Boiler Upgrade Scheme to help households save money on their energy bills by installing heat pumps. The scheme offers a £7,500 grant to homeowners who replace their traditional fossil fuel boilers with heat pumps.
UK households are being given the opportunity to significantly reduce their energy bills as the government announces an expansion of its Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Chris O'Shea, CEO of Centrica, the parent company of British Gas, expressed his delight that the scheme could potentially save his customers up to £456 a year on energy bills.
This announcement follows the government's decision to expand its Warm Homes Plan, which provides a grant of £7,500 to households looking to replace their traditional fossil fuel boiler with a heat pump. Heat pumps, a novel method of heating homes, operate similarly to a reverse air conditioning unit. They draw in air from outside, warm it, and then distribute it throughout your home. The government is offering a £7,500 discount on the price of a heat pump, paid directly to your installer. While the government estimates this can save £300 a year off bills, Centrica prices the savings at £456. Regulations surrounding heat pumps are also being eased: planning permission will no longer be required, restrictions on noise levels and boundaries have been relaxed, and upgrades will now be available to those who rent or live in social housing, reports the Express. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero stated: 'Up to 300,000 households will benefit from home upgrades in the next year, as the government announces new steps to help households of every kind take up measures that can help save money on their bills and deliver cleaner heating.' 'Homeowners in England and Wales are set to receive a £7,500 heat pump grant through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which saw record-breaking applications in October, as per Ofgem.' 'Households can now install an air source heat pump without needing to submit a planning application in England effectively removing the 1m rule. Octopus Energy's data reveals that 34% of those who order a heat pump are discouraged or drop out due to planning permission issue
