While unions and industry groups have welcomed the move, environmental organizations have voiced criticism, accusing the government of uncritically accepting industry claims.Currently, nuclear energy contributes approximately 15% of the UK's electricity supply. However, many of the existing reactors are nearing the end of their operational lifespan and are scheduled for decommissioning over the next decade. Mini nuclear power stations, known as small modular reactors (SMRs), offer a more cost-effective and scalable alternative to traditional nuclear plants.
