The UK has been hit by a virus double whammy as cases of Covid and colds soar, new figures show 🔺 BawdenTom reports:
cases have jumped by 70 per cent in 10 days while colds have risen by more by half, according to the ZOE Health Study.
There were an estimated 81,666 daily symptomatic cases of Covid in the UK on Friday – compared to around 130,000 cases in late December, 225,000 last summer and a record 300,000 last spring, according to the ZOE app. “Covid cases are rising fast and cold cases seem to be mirroring them,” Tim Spector, the King’s College London professor who runs the ZOE app, told“XXB.1.5 is a driver of Covid – it is the one we’re watching. It’s not the dominant one yet but it looks like it’s moving up.
Instead, he thinks the current wave will peak at similar levels to the Christmas wave, where daily infections rose to around 130,000 – although he concedes it’s hard to predict these things with much certainty.
