Demonstrations are set to take place in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura
British holidaymakers heading to the Canary Islands for October half term are warned of more anti-tourism protests planned across the islands. Demonstrations are set to take place on October 20 in “key tourist areas” coinciding with World Tourism Day
Among the main concerns are: precarious working conditions, environmental degradation, and unchecked construction. Ana, a spokesperson from the Abeque collective, told Canarian Weekly that there’s a need for tourists to understand how their visit impacts the islands. The demonstrations come after months of rising anti-tourism sentiment in Spanish holiday destinations.
It added: “Coello believes the situation demands immediate action to address the environmental and social challenges posed by the current model.”
