Hospitals across the UK are facing a crisis due to a surge in flu, COVID-19, norovirus, and RSV cases. Junior doctor Luke Craddock describes the grueling conditions in the emergency department, with overcrowding, long waiting times, and exhausted staff. He highlights the inadequate social care system as a contributing factor, pushing patients with non-critical needs into hospitals.
Flu , Covid-19, norovirus, and RSV are overwhelming hospitals across the UK, pushing health services to breaking point
Dr Craddock is working in the majors area of the emergency department, which has been inundated with patients over the past month as flu cases and other viral illnesses have surged in numbers. For patients, it can mean a longer time spent in the waiting room where they are more likely to pick up flu or Covid, and frayed tempers as they await treatment.“Yesterday, I had 9 or 10 patients I was managing at any one time”, he said, “Personally I would be happier with about five.“Patients will receive a poorer quality of care because we are spreading our time between so many patients, which is far from ideal.
