UK is more open to Brexit deal on Northern Ireland because of fears over energy supply 🔴 HugoGye has the story.
He added: “I think what you see is that the whole dynamic of politics in Europe has been radically transformed by the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis and other issues. I think today we’ve had a very, very positive conversation in the new spirit of friendship, and that’s what we need to focus on.”
Mr Heaton-Harris also cited the need to co-operate over Ukraine and energy as a reason to end the hostility with the EU. He said: “We are all suffering from the energy shock that has been brought about by Putin’s illegal war on Ukraine. Mr Heaton-Harris refused to guarantee there would be progress on the Protocol by that point, saying: “I think it’s a fool’s gold looking for timelines here.”
Ireland’s foreign minister Simon Coveney called for all sides to accept the need for compromise. He said: “What we’re after here is a nil-all draw, where everybody can walk away feeling that they haven’t won or lost, but they can live with the outcome.”
