Amidst rising winter illnesses, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warns about a distinctive symptom indicating Covid-19. A change in sense of taste or smell is a key indicator to watch out for. The UKHSA also highlights that while Covid cases slightly decreased, deaths and hospitalizations are on the rise.

Brits have been issued a warning about a distinctive symptom when eating that could indicate Covid-19, amidst other winter illnesses. The UK Government has updated its guidance on differentiating various viruses as case numbers rise. The UK Health Security Agency ( UKHSA ) notes 'high levels' of flu, RSV, Covid-19, and norovirus each winter, but recognises the difficulty in distinguishing them without knowing specific symptoms.

Amidst persistent high Covid cases, UKHSA data reveals 1,069 confirmed cases for the week ending December 11, marking a slight 1.6 per cent decrease from the prior week. Yet, Covid-related deaths and hospitalisations are on the upswing, with 107 deaths by December 6, up by 8.1 per cent, and 1,085 hospital admissions by November 30, increasing by 1.5 per cent. Despite the end of mandatory self-isolation for Covid, the NHS still advises staying home if symptomatic and reducing contact with others. To confirm if it's Covid, the UKHSA highlights one symptom in particular: a change in sense of taste or smell is a key Covid indicator to watch out for. The UKHSA listed other symptoms to watch out for. They stated: 'We have seen COVID-19 symptoms change over time. Today, many people now experience cold-like symptoms but some will also experience fever or chills, continuous cough, shortness of breath, tiredness, body aches, headache, sore throat, blocked nose, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhoea, or change in sense of taste or smell.', reports the Mirror. In contrast, the UKHSA noted that flu typically presents with severe cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, sneezing, and watery eyes, often accompanied by a fever or body aches. RSV is typically characterized by a cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, tiredness, and fever. The primary symptoms of norovirus, according to the UKHSA, include nausea, diarrhoea, and vomiting, as well as potential high temperature, headache, and aching arms and leg
