He said the higher the alert level, the stricter the lockdown measures need to be in order to a void a second wave of the killer bug."Thanks to you, people across the country, we have collectively helped to bring the R level down. We are now in a position to begin moving to level 3, in careful steps."
Until now Britain has been operating under a level four lockdown - this is when the level of transmission is 'high or rising' and enforced social distancing measures are in place.
