Experts and MPs have warned of 'back door' security risks as UK police use Chinese surveillance cameras despite growing concerns over Beijing's spying activities
The cameras are manufactured by a subsidiary in China, while Reveal Media also supplies cameras from Shenzhen Eeyelog Technology Ltd – a Chinese firm which provides body cams to the Chinese government, according to thethat UK police forces’ use of the technology raises questions about UK citizens’ privacy, citing an increased risk of exposure to cyber attacks, espionage and spying by the Chinese government.
“Public organisations, such as the national police, have then no clue how the algorithms in the AI-application work, don’t own the data by themselves and have no knowledge how the analysis takes place”. The UK government has committed to removing Chinese made surveillance cameras from sensitive sites by 2025.
Pete Fussey, professor of sociology at the University of Essex and a leading expert on surveillance and facial recognition, told: “There is a cyber security threat from facial recognition body cams because where the image is taken and where it is processed are often in two different places – with two different machines, leaving data vulnerable to cyber attacks”.
