Lorries filled with masks, respirators and other protective kit are being sent to Germany, Spain and Italy because the government is ignoring offers to give it to UK workers.
The TUC Union has called for an independent inquiry into what they called the ‘grotesque failure’ of planning by the government.
‘First of all we were told it was a problem of distribution, then it was a problem of supply and demand and then we were hearing from manufacturers and textile companies that they couldn’t get an answer from the government when they were making offers of help.‘Unions made that call to arms, we’ve been in touch with manufacturers, brilliant companies who were switching production to produce PPE, but they still had a problem in getting the government to take up those offers.
The first of three RAF flights finally left on Monday for Turkey to begin collecting a consignment of PPE including 400,000 surgical gowns – the flight was initially supposed to leave on Sunday.A shipment containing supplies of PPE from China waits to be sent to Italy Lorries registered in Italy arrived on Monday at a warehouse owned by Veenak International, a pharmaceutical wholesaler based in Birmingham, where they took delivery of 750,000 surgical masks before heading back across the Channel.
