Rachel Reeves, the UK Chancellor, stated that trading with China remains in the UK's national interest, emphasizing a 'pragmatic' approach to relations with Beijing. Despite pressure for a tougher stance on China due to allegations of spying and influence operations, Reeves stressed the importance of national security while pursuing investment opportunities from the Asian economic powerhouse. A planned register to address foreign influence will be implemented next year, with China's placement in a 'higher tier' requiring broader oversight due to security concerns, potentially impacting business relations. The Chancellor is expected to visit China in the new year for talks.
Rachel Reeves said trading with China was in the UK’s national interest as she promised a “pragmatic” approach to relations with Beijing.
Such a move could damage business relations with China at a time when the Government is seeking a better relationship with Beijing. “But, like other countries around the world, we should trade and seek investment when it is in our national interest to do so, and that will be the approach of this Government.”
