It comes following three accidents in the Red Sea which affected UK citizens

British holidaymakers have been warned of “serious concern” regarding the safety of Egyptian dive boats in the Red Sea following three accidents in which UK citizens were involved within the last 20 months.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch , an organisation within the UK government which carries out investigations to determine the causes of accidents at sea, has issued an update following evidence it obtained. The MAIB was formally registered in the UK as a ‘Substantially Interested State’ in Egyptian safety investigations into several accidents.

These include the capsize of Queen Carlton on April 24, 2023, resulting in the abandonment of the vessel with all passengers and crew rescued; a fire on Hurricane on 11 June 2023 resulting in the deaths of three UK nationals; the capsize of Sea Story on 25 November 2024 resulting in up to 18 fatalities and people missing, including two UK nationals.

MAIB said that it was preparing a safety bulletin identifying areas of concerns that UK citizens should consider before booking an afloat-based driving holiday in the region. In its travel guidance for Egypt, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office warns that safety standards of Red Sea resort diving operators “vary considerably”. It adds: “Very inexpensive operators may not provide adequate safety and insurance standards.”For more of today's top stories, click here.
