British tourists in the European Union (EU) have been issued with urgent travel advice amid severe flooding in parts of the continent - with one man even losing his life.

The UK Foreign Office has issued an urgent alert to British tourists and holidaymakers in Austria, advising of potential road closures and public transport disruptions due to flooding in the East of the country. Those enjoying winter and autumn breaks in the European Union are being urged to stay informed.

Austrian Federal Railways has advised: "Due to the current weather conditions in Austria, deviations and delays in train services are to be expected from Friday, September 13 to Thursday, September 19. We therefore ask you to postpone non-urgent journeys to another time.

In Lower Austria, emergency services have been stretched with nearly 5,000 interventions overnight as flooding trapped many residents. In Vienna, firefighters have been called out approximately 150 times since Friday to deal with storm debris and flooded cellars, according to local reports, reports Birmingham Live.
