British holidaymakers planning trips to Spain in 2025 should be aware of a significant change in border control procedures. The European Union's new Entry/Exit System, initially postponed in November, is expected to be implemented later this year. This automated system will require UK tourists to scan their passports at self-service kiosks instead of having them manually stamped by border officials.
The system will record details such as the traveler's name, passport type, entry and exit dates and locations, and biometric data including fingerprints and facial images. While the exact implementation date is yet to be confirmed, it is anticipated to come into effect in 2025. Until then, travelers will continue to have their passports stamped upon arrival and departure.The Spanish government has specific entry requirements for travelers from outside the EU, including the UK. These requirements include being prepared to provide evidence of meeting the necessary conditions when requested by border control officials. Besides a valid passport, the Foreign Office advises that visitors might be asked to present a return or onward ticket, proof of travel insurance, a hotel booking confirmation, or an invitation if staying with friends or family. Additionally, travelers need to demonstrate they have sufficient funds for their stay. According to the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs' website, visitors are required to have a minimum of €114 per person per day, which is approximately £95. For stays longer than nine days, travelers must possess at least €1,021 (around £859). It's important to note that these figures are subject to change and may not reflect the requirements for 2025. Tourists can prove their financial means by presenting cash, a traveler's cheque, or a credit card accompanied by a bank statement. Online bank statements are not accepted. While many tourists may not be asked to provide this evidence, it's highly advisable to have these documents ready upon arrival. Failure to present them when requested could lead to entry denial
