Brits travelling to Portugal over half term are being urged to do one thing in light of long EES queuesUK tourists who are planning to travel to Portugal over half term are being urged to take action this week in order to speed up border checks, following Entry/Exit System changes.
British travellers heading to Portugal over half term are being advised to complete an online process before their holiday which aims to speed up getting through the EU's new EES. Brits are being alerted to an app which can "help save time" when entering the Schengen Area. The notice comes as thousands of passengers have reported facing delays when trying to enter and leave the Schengen Area following the roll out of the EES in April.
While the EES is designed to speed up border checks, many have reported facing significant waits and last month 122 people heading to Manchester Airport were left stranded in Milan when an easyJet flights was forced to leave without them due to delays at the border.to temporarily suspend EES checks ahead of the peak summer season and it is understood the EU has said some member states can remove the checks if queues become unmanageable.
Greece has now suspended checks until September, and it is understood Portugal is waving passengers through when the queues are too longTo help manage long queues for British tourists heading to Portugal, travellers can use the EU’s Travel to Europe Mobile application which allows them to complete an entry questionnaire. The EU website states that the app can be used by non-EU nationals to pre-register their data within 72 hours prior to entering or leaving a European country.
Advice on the EU website reads: "The Travel to Europe mobile application is designed for non-EU travellers who are subject to EES registration.
"It allows people to pre-register their passport data and facial image before reaching a border crossing point where the mobile app is in use. Through the app travellers can also fill in the entry conditions questionnaire in advance.
"It added: "The app does not replace border checks but makes border crossing smoother and faster and more efficient. "
