The European Union has confirmed the exact date that its new Entry/Exit System (EES) will be introduced
UK holidaymakers heading to Spain and other popular European destinations are being warned about new entry rules that will be introduced later this year. This new system will change how tourists are processed when they enter and leave 29 countries, including Spain, Greece, Portugal, Italy and France. Instead of having their passports stamped by hand, travellers from outside the EU will need to scan their passports at a self-service kiosk before crossing an external border.
The scheme, which has been delayed several times, is now set to start on October 6 this year. There have already been worries about possible long delays at UK border checkpoints like Dover, and some airlines have also expressed concerns. At present, Brits can only stay in the Schengen area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Non-EU tourists who want to stay longer must apply for a visa.
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System is due to start from mid-2025. Tourists will need to apply online or via an app.
