No immediate injuries or damage have been reported on Rhodes
An earthquake hit a popular holiday island in Greece in the early hours of this morning. A 4.2magnitude earthquake struck the island of Rhodes on Thursday morning at 3.19am.
No injuries or damages were immediately reported, according to local news site ekathimerini.com. The epicentre of the earthquake was located 26 kilometres southwest coast of the island, according to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens. Rhodes is a popular Greek island for British holidaymakers. It’s the largest of the Dodecanese islands and lies near to the Turkish coast.Last summer the island was plagued with wildfires which led to the evacuation of thousands of people, tourists and residents alike. Fortunately this summer there have been no significant wildfires reported on Greece.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office does warn Brits that there is a ‘risk’ of earthquakes and earth tremors in Greece. It urges UK travellers to do the following: familiarise themselves with safety procedures in the event of an earthquake, follow advice given by local authorities and to contact the Greek emergency services on 112 if in immediate danger.
The Greek Civil Protection website also has advice on what to do before, during and after earthquakes. More details can be found here. Always check the FCDO website for the latest guidance before travel.
