Richard Braine has been elected as the new leader of Ukip, after securing more than half of the party membership’s vote.
He finished ahead of Freddy Vachha with 20 per cent, Ben Walker on 14 per cent and former deputy leader Mike Hookem on 13 per cent. Speaking after the announcement, Mr Braine said: ‘Thank you very much to the wonderful UKIP members – the independent thinkers who have reasserted nationhood and changed the world.
‘I’m determined to get the message out from the party about our manifesto and our great policies and get people in this country to understand that UKIP is the ‘far-moderate’ voice of common sense in Britain.’The party has nosedived in the polls since former leader Nigel Farage quit to form the Brexit party, dropping from around 10 per cent near the end of last year to not far above zero.
