Kyiv has been relatively quiet for months, but those on the ground say they were"expecting" such an attack.A glimpse of the scene in Kyiv "The details are being confirmed," a spokesperson for the State Emergency Services said, confirming there had been deaths and injuries."It's in the last hour these reports have been breaking about several explosions in the centre of Kyiv.

He said Moscow simply"wants Ukraine and the West to believe Russia is ready for nuclear war to intimidate them". "He will have learned [his] lesson, and the West should then anticipate more nuclear threats from Russia. Fortunately, [the] US and European leaders seem to understand this."It is not obvious nuke use in Ukraine would have decisive military impact;Russian nuclear use would alienate China, India and Global South. The mayor of Kyiv has confirmed in the last few moments that"several explosions" were noted in the capital early on Monday morning.

Blasts were also reported overnight in Zaporizhzhia, where 13 people were killed in shelling on Sunday. The photographs below are the latest to emerge from two newly recaptured towns in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
