The president of the respected Institute for the Study of War has given her thoughts on Kyiv's counteroffensive, saying the Ukrainians have made 'important gains'. And jailed Putin critic Alexei Navalvy has spoken out from prison a day after losing his appeal against a 19-year sentence.
As it approaches 11pm in Ukraine, let's take a look at the latest:
Former Wagner Group mercenaries previously based in Belarus have reportedly signed contracts with the Russian defence ministry and relocated to the eastern front in Ukraine; Military experts said the missiles cannot be repaired in Bulgaria but Ukraine has the facilities to fix them or use them for spare parts.
Yesterday, speaker Anthony Rota, who publicly acknowledged Yaroslav Hunka, 98, in the House last Friday and called him a hero, quit and said he bore sole responsibility for what happened. Dr Kimberly Kagan told Sky News that Ukrainian soldiers had made"gains" in their counteroffensive and also"made it impossible for Russian forces to move their combat power from Bakhmut.
Bakhmut is a city in the eastern Donbas region which for months Russian forces, including Wagner Group mercenaries, relentlessly attacked in an effort to take full control of the east.Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has said he will be given"the strictest possible punishment" after losing his appeal against a new 19-year prison term and feels like a"tired rock star on the verge of depression".
"I feel like a tired rock star on the verge of depression. I've reached the top of the charts and there's nothing more to strive for," he said.: Navalny, 47, now faces a transfer to a"special regime" prison colony, the harshest grade in Russia's penal system, with the prospect of staying there until he is in his mid-70s.
Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Crimea in recent weeks, and claims to have killed the commander of Russia's Black Sea fleet in an attack on Sevastopol last week. "The main priority for the new team members - our soldiers, their life, health and dignity," Mr Umerov said. The journalist immediately called the police and said that he had previously received threats by mail and on the phone.also reported that military expert Konstantin Sivkov had been sent a severed pig's head.
But European football's governing body decided at a meeting this week to allow Russia's under-17s teams back into the fold in time for qualifying to begin next month for their European Championships. The Football Association is understood to have backing from the UK government in refusing to play against Russian teams.
