The article examines two contrasting issues: the ongoing war in Ukraine and the growing debate surrounding mobile phone use in schools. It highlights the international implications of the war, Trump's controversial stance, and the potential for phone bans to improve academic performance.

The war in Ukraine has endured for over a decade, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives. The magnitude of the devastation is difficult to grasp for those of us living on the opposite side of Europe, far from the relentless barrage of shells and missiles. What commenced as a limited incursion by Russian mercenaries in the Donbas region in 2014 escalated into a full-scale military invasion in February 2022.

The sheer scale of the military assault astonished Western governments, many of whom had naively assumed that Vladimir Putin would never unleash such reckless aggression. Ukraine garnered the sympathy of the global community, and Putin was condemned as a tyrant. Military equipment and financial aid flowed into Kyiv, proving sufficient to halt the Russian advance.Putin had fully anticipated Ukraine's capital falling to his armies. The fact that it never did stands as a testament to the courage of the Ukrainian army. However, those defending Ukraine must now feel as though the rug has been pulled out from under their feet. The Trump administration in Washington has declared that the country cannot expect to reclaim its pre-2014 borders. American peacekeepers will not be deployed to Ukraine. Trump himself has stated his intention to meet with Putin soon. Russian officials and propagandists can hardly conceal their elation. But Ukraine cannot be abandoned. It must be an equal partner to Russia in peace negotiations. Trump aspires to be perceived as a peacemaker. But his disregard for Ukraine cannot be left unchallenged.Meanwhile, criticism is mounting regarding the practice of students bringing mobile phones into schools. It seems self-evident that permitting smartphones in classrooms - and therefore access to social media - will create significant distractions for both pupils and teachers. It is therefore intriguing to learn that a ban on phones at Berwickshire High School has resulted in improved exam results. Headteacher Bruce Robertson implemented a policy prohibiting phone use within the school building but allowed pupils to text or make calls in the playground. He reports a 20% increase in exam success since implementing the ban. Government Ministers are concerned about the impact of phones on learning and they must heed the success of this school. A national crackdown is already underway. However, greater urgency is required. Individual schools should emulate the lead set by Mr. Robertson's school, supported by national restrictions. Schools are intended for learning, not for students to sit at the back of the classroom watching films or listening to music
