The attack is the first time a Russian Su-57 has been successfully targeted by Ukrainian forces

“Fighterbomber” said the jet fighter was struck by shrapnel and the damage was currently being assessed to see if the aircraft could be repaired. He said if the plane were to be deemed beyond repair it would be the first combat loss of a Su-57. Ukraine, which lacks the vast arsenal of missiles available to Moscow, has focused on making long-range drones to strike targets deep inside Russia.He said Putin’s response would show whether he thought the strike was within NATO rules of engagement. If however, he perceives the attack to signify a “change into a new phase where Ukraine is given permission and encouragement to strike inside Russian territory” it will “smell to him like a NATO attack on Russia”.
However, Professor Glees said with both the US and the UK “weakened” by run-ups to a general election, Putin will “reason now is a good time to get tough., but that ultimately the Russian leader is “undermined by this successful attack.” A defence expert, Maria Avdeeva, posted on X saying the attack was a “real slap in the face” for Russia as they have only a few of these jets and “tried to hide them well.”
