Police said the items went missing after being put on display between 2009 and 2013 in a museum in Kyiv.
Spanish police have confiscated 11 pieces of ancient gold jewellery which they said were taken out of Ukraine illegally in 2016. A police statement said five people who were attempting to sell the pieces in Spain have been arrested in recent weeks.
Those arrested included two Ukrainians, one of them an Orthodox Church priest, and three Spaniards. The jewellery was said to be worth 60 million euros and dated from between the eighth and fourth centuries BC. Police said the items were part of Ukraine’s national heritage. They went missing after being put on display between 2009 and 2013 in a museum in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital. The pieces included a belt, earrings and necklaces. An ornate gold belt was seized in 2021 and the rest of the pieces were confiscated in recent weeks. Police said the investigations continued. The pieces are being studied by Spain’s National Archaeological Museum and the country’s Cultural Heritage Institute. Two boats carrying 314 migrants reach Canary IslandsUS oil giant Chevron agrees 53 billion dollar deal to buy HessUS vows to defend Philippines after row with China over ships’ collisionArgentinian election could bring in right-wing populist presidentSwift beats Scorsese at box office but Killers Of The Flower Moon opens strongly Israeli tank accidentally fires 'at Egyptian position' as IDF expresses 'sorrow' after border guards injured in blastNamed and shamed: Worldwide revulsion as student Marie Andersen pictured with anti-Semitic sign binning Star of DavidIran jails journalists who covered Mahsa Amini’s death for collaborating with USPhilippines coast guard ship and supply boat hit by Chinese vessels Israel vows to ‘go after the head of the snake’ in Iran if Hezbollah joins war as northern border tensions riseHumanitarian aid convoy crosses into Gaza Strip from EgyptUS mother and daughter held hostage by Hamas have been released, says IsraelJudge fines Donald Trump £4,100 over post maligning court employeeIsrael ‘does not plan to control life in Gaza’ after destroying HamasRepublicans drop Jim Jordan as House speaker nominee after three failed votesHouse Republicans reject Jim Jordan’s third bid to be named speaker Israel reveals plans to sever links with Gaza as part of a 'three phase' war with airstrikes and ground manoeuvresUS circuit court judge fatally shot in driveway of his homePhilippines’ military ordered to stop using AI apps due to security risksProsecutors tell judge Donald Trump is ‘not above the law’US military shoots down missiles and drones as it faces threats in Middle East'He saved a kibbutz from being infiltrated': Sister of murdered British IDF soldier Nathanel Young says he died a heroFrench officials warn young people they face heavy punishment for bomb threatsNorthern Europe braces for gale-force winds and floodsMarine samples gathered near Fukushima as treated radioactive water is releasedBritish mum to be hanged in India after drugging husband's biryani before murdering him in front of young sonRussian minister thanks North Korea for ‘unwavering’ support of war in UkraineIsrael will let Egypt deliver some aid to Gaza as it reels from hospital blastHundreds mourn as Israeli family of five that was killed together laid to restIngenious man 'pretends to be a mannequin until shopping centre closes before stealing jewellery'AirAsia boss criticised for shirtless massage during board meeting - but he hails work 'culture' Iranian kingpin who smuggled 10,000 migrants to UK in Europe-wide criminal operation is jailed for 11 yearsJoe Biden describes the 'shock, pain and rage' of Hamas attack on Israel and compares it to 'fifteen 9/11s' Tributes paid to British honeymoon couple shot dead on safari in Uganda ‘by group linked to Islamic State’US announces sanctions against 10 Hamas members over Israel attackPutin insists Ukraine’s new US-supplied weapon will not change war’s outcomeAustrian ex-chancellor Kurz on trial for ‘making false statements to inquiry’Deadly Malaysia landslide ’caused by heavy rain, not human activity’Biden lands in Israel as Middle East turmoil grows following Gaza hospital blast Joe Biden says Gaza hospital blast 'appears to have been caused by the other team' as he stands alongside Israeli PMBritish tourist among three shot dead in terror attack while on safari in Uganda, officials sayHamas and Israel trade blame as blast kills hundreds at Gaza hospitalProsecutors seeking to recharge Alec Baldwin over fatal shooting on film setAlicia Keys insists paraglider reference in online post ‘completely unrelated’ to Hamas attacks amid fan controversyMother of Israeli woman in Hamas hostage video appeals for her releaseIsraeli air strikes pound Gaza as efforts made to break deadlock on aidPoland’s three opposition parties poised for power, final election results show Iran warns Israel of 'preemptive action' in chilling threat amid fears war with Hamas could escalate across Middle EastPolice shoot terror suspect at Brussels cafe in manhunt for 'Isis' gunman who killed two Swedish football fans 'ISIS gunman' on the run after two football fans gunned down in streets of Belgium sparking huge manhuntMiniature Star Wars X-wing fighter fetches £2.5m at auctionto have died fighting HamasForest floor 'ripples like the sea' as trees buffeted by strong winds in Storm Babet,’ his family say as police probe death
