With 20,000+ Ukrainians facing amputations from the war, Ukrainian healthtech startups pivot to offer innovative prosthetic solutions.

As over 20,000 Ukrainians grapple with amputations from the war, Ukrainian medtech and healthtech startups shift their focus to provide innovative prosthetic solutions.Life drastically changed for Kyiv-based children’s choreographer Oleksandar Chaika on February 24, 2022. On the same day as the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, Chaika joined the Ukrainian army to defend his country.

“As the war broke out, some of our team members were in Berlin, and others in Kyiv. Each city hosted R&D facilities. It became clear that our theoretical preparations were insufficient in front of actual warfare. Then I remembered Mike Tyson’s quotation, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” There was a real possibility that Esper Bionics might not survive, but it wasn’t so important in those days.

“On the top of our design is the AI “brain”, which we can compare with some parts of the spinal cord or brain itself. Over time, the device analyzes and understands the user’s movement patterns, enhancing control and dexterity. This AI endows the prosthetic with a form of “intuition”. It enables the Esper Hand to learn and become more adaptive and responsive over time,” he says.

“In Ukraine, most our users are militaries, who share horrible yet inspirational stories. One such story is of Alexis, a combat medic who lost his arm while evacuating wounded comrades in eastern Ukraine. Now, equipped with the Esper Hand, Alexis returned to his volunteer duties on the front lines, also working as a rehabilitation specialist in Kyiv hospital.
