Ulrika Jonsson has opened up about her battle with alcohol and how she's chosen to spend Christmas alone this year, saying she won't be 'shunning the family'
Ulrika Jonsson has shared that she'll be spending Christmas alone this year. The 57 year old Swedish-British TV legend confessed that 2024 has been "a year of massive change" for her. She bravely opened up about her struggles with alcohol, revealing that there were times when she would drink until she blacked out. Ulrika admitted that she used to turn to alcohol to cope with anxiety, and it became a concern for her friends when she was unable to engage in conversations with them.
She "discovered that alcohol was not the solution" and that she needed to make changes in her life if she wanted to continue. "So, it felt apt that I should spend Christmas Day on my own," she told The Sun. "Not to wallow in some kind of perverse, self-indulgent pity-party but just because it will be nice to have a break from people-ing and life-ing," reports the Mirror.
While she'll be spending time with three of her children on Christmas Eve, her fourth child works abroad. Ulrika emphasised that she'll be "alone but I won't be lonely". The TV personality, who first became known as a weather presenter in the late '80s, has previously opened up about her struggles with alcohol, revealing that she had to want help for herself even though friends had expressed concern.
This comes after Ulrika, who appeared alongside Gregg in Celebrity Masterchef in 2017, described the host as 'arrogant' and admitted she was filled with anger after Gregg made a video accusing 'middle-class women of a certain age' for making the allegations against him. "I am nothing short of seething. Somewhere in his misogynistic, thoughtless, ancient mind he felt it appropriate to tell the world this. Oh, Gregg. Your ignorance and arrogance knows no bounds.
Continuing that the bracket of women he referred to includes herself, Ulrika said of the demographic: "The irony of this is that we are probably the hardiest bunch out there because we have been brought up on a diet of sexist, misogynistic, crude and sleazy comments and physical contact that was always surplus to requirements by the likes of Wallace, all our working lives.”
