It's been a busy few years for Aoife! Sp StudyAtUlster

Award-winning Derry fashion designer Aoife Harvey is soon to appear on our screens in the BBC NI show A Stitch Through Time, but first there’s the not-insignificant matter of her graduation with a first-class honours degree in Textile Art, Design and Fashion from Ulster University’s Belfast campus.

Then there’s the TV show, which premieres on BBC1 NI on July 17th. “It's a four-week challenge, and it's all about Ulster's rich textile history and heritage,” Aoife explains. Resilience and tenacity, too. After her GCSEs, Aoife decided not to follow her friends back to school for A-levels, instead choosing Northwest Regional College in Limavady, where she completed a foundation year for a London College of Fashion course.

“Belfast has been so good to me,” Aoife says. "If I was in London, or Dublin, those are massive classes with loads of people. Ulster's smaller, so you had one-on-one time with lecturers and teachers. If I ever had a question, I could run over to Dean, my fashion lecturer, and be like, 'Oh, could you give me a hand with this?'. They were always there to answer questions and always encouraging me to do more.

“I love it,” she says. “It's not about making money for me right now. It's just about showing people what you can do with reclaimed materials, and what you can do starting with nothing.
