The unnamed peacekeeper was hit by gunfire at UNIFIL's Naqoura headquarters in southern Lebanon 'due to ongoing military activity nearby', UNIFIL said

A fifth United Nations peacekeeper was shot during clashes between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon last night, the UN confirmed today.

The IDF has vowed to carry out a 'thorough review' after two Sri Lankan peacekeepers were injured by an Israeli strike on Friday - after two Indonesian peacekeepers were injured falling from a watchtower targeted by a tank. What is Resolution 1701? UN Resolution 1701 ended the 2006 Lebanon war between Israel and Hezbollah with the agreement that all Israeli forces would withdraw to be replaced by Lebanese and UNIFIL peacekeepers.

Under the terms of the agreement, Israel cannot enforce the Resolution itself. But with 60,000 civilians displaced from northern Israel by the conflict, the government finds itself under huge pressure at home. The IDF has acknowledged that troops were responsible for an incident in which two Sri Lankan soldiers for UNIFIL were injured.

Italy's defence minister Guido Crosetto told a press conderence: 'This is not a mistake. This is not an accident.' In April, three British aid workers were killed during Israeli air strikes on their convoy in Gaza, sparking fury. Clashes between Israel and Hamas in Gaza have also seen the deaths of scores of journalists caught in crossfire.

Some 2.1 million people have already been displaced by the war, with the ailing Lebanese government ill-positioned to provide hardy shelter or food for the civilian population caught in the middle. Israel vowed to oust Hamas from Gaza and return 251 hostages taken into captivity after the de facto governing authority of the Palestinian enclave led an shock incursion into southern Israel, massacring some 1,170 people on October 7, 2023.Israel's war in Gaza prompted Iranian proxy Hezbollah to launch attacks from Lebanon - a theatre Israel has turned more towards in recent weeks since announcing a 'lower intensity' phase of the war in Gaza.

Sirens sounded in northern Israel, with the military saying it had 'successfully intercepted' a 'number of launches' from Lebanon on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Za'rit military base and Houma in the Golan Heights were also reported to have been targeted today. Casualties were not reported.

Israel warned residents of south Lebanon 'not to return' home as troops continued fighting Hezbollah militants in the area this morning. Thousands of people remain trapped as the IDF issues evacuation orders for residents to flee towards the south.
