David Derbyshire rangled himself onto the Elland Road pitch and shoved the Newcastle United manager

An out-of-control Leeds United fan has been jailed after assaulting Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe during last season's match Elland Road.

At a hearing on July 21, Derbyshire pleaded guilty to charges of entering the playing area at a designated football match without lawful excuse and common assault against Eddie Howe during extra time at Elland Road on May 13. The court heard how Derbyshire had left the stand in the 93rd minute and approached the Newcastle dugout and had a verbal altercation with Mr Howe before pushing his left shoulder.

After the incident, Howe said Derbyshire's actions should act as a wake-up call for those responsible for the safety of players and staff. Howe said: "I actually can’t remember whether he pushed me or not, I've got no idea, it's such a strange thing because you're concentrating on the game and you don't expect it to happen. He confronted me, said something that I can't repeat and was then led away.

"No one should have to face that, playing a sport we love and trying to entertain the country, no one should feel like their own personal safety is violated. It is something for us to reflect on."
