The usually congested M61 and M6 motorways in Lancashire have been experiencing surprisingly smooth traffic flow, baffling local observers. The unexpected improvement has left many wondering about the cause behind this phenomenon.
The motorway is one of my least favorite places to be when traffic is at its worst. A multi-hour closure after an accident is a nightmare, picturing those stranded vehicles and frustrated drivers. I've written about the congestion on the M61 and M6, especially during rush hour, from the perspective of someone who often joins the M61 from the M65. It's always disheartening to see those red blinking lights and the slowing traffic. But lately, something remarkable has happened.
Even at peak times like 5pm, the traffic on both the M61 and M6 has been surprisingly light, almost unbelievable. It's been consistently smoother than usual for weeks, and I can't pinpoint the reason. Perhaps it's a temporary phenomenon, but I'm enjoying the unexpected reprieve. I've been trying to figure it out, but no clear explanation comes to mind. Maybe someone else has noticed this and can shed some light on it. It's not just the M61; even the M6 at Preston, typically jammed during rush hour, has been clear. I can't recall the last time the M6 was so uncongested at Junction 31, apart from a major accident a few weeks ago. Whatever the cause, I hope it continues. It would be fantastic to write about something other than motorway congestion for a change
