It was a controversial scene
People in Retford were stunned to find the shutters down at a popular butcher shop in Retford. Shoppers who tried to pop in to McKenzie's Meats in Carolgate on Monday said the fridges had been emptied and the lights were off.
There has been no official notice over the future of the business, however. Nearby Treswell resident Mary Grundy, 75, also said she arrived to find the butcher closed on Tuesday, November 8. She said: "I saw the shutters were down... I always used to come here to get my meat." Another resident, Frank Ward, 75, spoke generally about the importance of a butcher shop. He said: "Many elderly people, especially men, their spouse dies and they suddenly realise that they don't know how to cook."My wife had a stroke six years ago and one of her care workers had a word with me in private and asked me if I knew how to cook. I said I didn't and she said she saw it all the time.
It comes after brothers Roger and Kevin Burton announced that Geo. Burton Butchers on nearby Churchgate would be closing its doors for the final time after almost 150 years in business. Roger said that they initially put the business on the market, but no one showed any interest in taking it on.
