Simon Calder, a travel expert, suggests Bulgaria as a bargain destination for travelers in 2025, highlighting the country's affordability and favorable summer temperatures.
Following a record-breaking year for travel, many people are already eyeing their next getaway for 2025. In the first seven months of 2024, Europe saw international tourist arrivals climb by 11 per cent from the previous year, and figures were just four per cent shy of those in 2019 - indicating a rebound from the pandemic's impact.
However, it appears that tourists continue to favour traditional hotspots such as Spain, France, Italy, and Greece when considering holiday destinations within Europe. Spain is poised to hit a new milestone, anticipating over 90 million visitors, while Paris, hosting the 2024 Olympic Games, experienced an 18.9 per cent surge in tourism compared to the same timeframe in 2023. Travel expert and journalist Simon Calder shared with the Daily Express his top underrated European destinations for 2025, aiming to inspire travellers to venture beyond the well-trodden paths. He remarked: 'All the indications that we've seen, for instance the figures of people going through airports and the latest figures from travel companies show that we have an insatiable appetite for travel. And 2025 is going to be fantastic in having wider horizons than ever.' To those looking for an affordable trip, he advised: 'If you want a bargain destination, then I would head for the Balkans - Bulgaria is always very good value for package holidays.' Bulgaria, nestled on the eastern side of the Balkans with the Danube river to its north and the Black Sea to its east, shares borders with Greece and Turkey, enjoying similarly ideal hot summer temperatures. In 2023, Bulgaria celebrated a record-breaking year with 8.6 million tourist arrivals, marking a 13 per cent increase from the previous year, although these figures pale in comparison to Greece's 33 million and Turkey's 49 million visitors in the same timefram
