The House Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously passed a bill on Thursday that could pave the way for a sweeping ban on TikTok across all electronic devices

Sat, March 9th 2024 at 10:34 PM.The move is fueled by concerns over potential Chinese government spying.Charles Palmer, Professor of Interactive Media | Harrisburg University

“I think it’s a misnomer saying, ‘All this data is going to China.’ So, part of this is the idea of identifying TikTok as a media company and then there are no media companies that are owned by outside entities that work inside of the U.S.” Professor of Interactive Media at Harrisburg University, Charles Palmer, “We have to guess at what can be tracked and those of you that are using TikTok and you say hey look at that funny video, I really like that video. Well, it’s because the algorithm understands you and your interests, them being able to serve that stuff up to you.”“I can then influence you by only showing you parts of a story, one view, and maybe manipulate your understanding of a concept or an idea,” commented Palmer.

If the bill becomes law, ByteDance would have six months to sell before any potential ban takes effect.Palmer stated, “We have no idea. I think the app will stay on your phone. As soon as you launch it, you’ll probably get an error notice.”If it passes, it will be voted on by the Senate before reaching President Biden's desk.
