Merseyside Police discovered a suspected unexploded ordnance inside a house in Birkenhead, leading to the evacuation of a small number of properties. The incident followed a stop and search operation the previous night where a vehicle was stopped and ammunition seized.
People have been evacuated after police found an 'unexploded ordnance' inside a house. Merseyside Police confirmed to the ECHO today, Sunday, January 5 that officers had cordoned off Briardale Road in Birkenhead following a search of a property. The force said the incident was in relation to a stop and search in the Birkenhead area last night, Saturday, January 4. Officers stopped a vehicle at the junction of Brassey Street and Patten Street at around 11.50pm.
They seized ammunition and the driver was detained. A 63-year-old man from Oxton was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm without a certificate. He remains in custody for questioning. Following a search of a property on Briardale Road as part of enquiries, a suspected ordnance was discovered inside. Merseyside Police said advice was sought from the army's explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team and a 'small number of properties' on Briardale Road have been evacuated as a precaution. A spokesperson added: 'A road closure is in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area while the matter is being dealt with. We thank local residents for their patience while this incident is dealt with.
