GMB union says offer for NHS workers is 'kick in the teeth' as teacher's union threatens 'largest ballot for a generation' on industrial action

, adding that the rise recognises the contribution of NHS staff while balancing the need to protect taxpayers, manage public spending and not drive up inflation. He added: “Very high inflation-driven settlements would have a worse impact on pay packets in the long run than proportionate and balanced increases now, and it is welcome that the pay review bodies agree with this approach.”

Danny Mortimer, chief executive of NHS Employers, warned: “NHS employers have only been allocated enough money to award staff a 3% rise, so unless the extra increase is funded by the Treasury, very worryingly this will have to be drawn from existing budgets and will mean an estimated unplanned £1.8 billion shortfall.”The NHS pay offer came on the same day that MPs were told hospital and prison workers are quitting for less stressful and sometimes better paid jobs in supermarkets.

Starting salaries for tachers will rise by 8.9 per cent, a decision taken previously as part of the Government’s promise to raise entry pay to £30,000.
