Calling the election of Chris Minns as Premier an opportunity to 'restart,' Unions NSW called on the government to uphold its claim that wage growth was an 'urgent priority', as they gear up for further workplace reforms.

Unions demand NSW govt prioritise public sector wage growth as Labor leader Chris Minns takes the reins

Labour will be able to form a majority government following a two-party-preferred swing of 6.3 per cent. They have so far claimed the minimum requirement of 47 seats, with the Liberals on 27 and 10 shared between independents and the Greens.Incoming NSW Premier Chris Minns is under pressure from unions to honour his pledge of increasing public sector wages once his cabinet is sworn in.

Mr Minns campaigned on a platform of public sector growth, pledging to hire more nurses and create more teaching positions in addition to raising wages. NSW Teachers Federation president Angelo Gavrielatos was amongst union leaders who heralded the announcement, saying the incoming government needed to address the"deliberate neglect" of the state's education system.

"We need a proper industrial relations system where [the NSW Industrial Relations Commission] is the last port of call, not the first port of call in negotiations...and disputes are handled by people with skills who understand the sector with skills to handle disputes rather than people who just say no," he said.

Labor did not release any costings for their plans to change the wage cap, but the Parliamentary Budget Office said an increase of 1 per cent would cost the budget $2.6 billion leading to concerns the policy will balloon state debt.
